Kanheri Caves

These Buddhist caves date back to the 1st century BC. The caves are located within the Borivali National Park.
Once the caves served an important trade route and were home to a Buddhist university that was well known throughout the world. They also became an important settlement for the Buddhists in the 3rd century A.D.
Most of the caves consist of rooms that were used for activities such as meditation, studying and living. The various sculptures, rock cut pillars and stupas are a beautiful sight to watch. The green landscape around the caves is a relief to the eyes. The huge Buddhist shrine in one of the congregation halls is the highlight of the caves.
After visiting the caves, you can do a lion safari (10 minutes, closed on Mondays), a mini train ride and a visit to the adjoining Jain temple.
